2008 Auction Info

Works/San Jose is having their art auction!

At last: the Benefit Art Auction! You are the key to Works’ renewal!

Dear artist and friend of Works/San José:

For the first time in two years, Works, your community art and performance center, is asking for your art for the 2008 Benefit Auction! Works is right now working toward a stable home, rehiring its part time gallery coordinator, restarting music and performance nights, and accepting exhibition proposals for the new year in its current space as the guest of the property owners. This will be the most important auction ever for a south bay arts organization, and your commitment and most inspired artwork are needed now to move works into the future. Over the previous few auctions works has nearly doubled its revenue from this essential fundraising event. At this critical time, with your help, we can and must continue this trend.

PLEASE CONFIRM right away that you will contribute to this important event by sending an email to auction@workssanjose.org. Include the spelling of your name, email address, and phone number, so that we can include you in auction press releases and on our website as early as possible. Please find artist donation forms, instructions for sending a jpeg image of your work, and auction updates at: www.workssanjose.org

Please deliver art to 451 South First Street in downtown San José on one of these 3 days: Thursday, November 6, 3 to 7pm, Friday, November 7, noon to 4pm—or 8 to 10pm during South First Friday, or on Saturday, November 8, noon to 4pm. All work should be complete with frame, glass, etc. as appropriate, or otherwise ready to hang or display. You may retain a percentage of the sale of your work or donate the entire sale amount to works. As just one token of our appreciation, we offer you a free one year membership to Works/San José.

Exhibition: November 20 through December 6
Reception and Auction: December 6 starting at 5pm with auction at 7pm

We look forward to seeing both you and your work! All proceeds support exhibition, performance, and education programs at Works/San José, your nonprofit, volunteer-run, community art and performance center.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
The Board of Directors of Works/San José

P.S.: Please also pass this on to an artist whose work you would like to see in the Benefit Auction.

works/san josé is member supported, primarily funded by this single auction event and individual donations; and is also funded in part by the
city of san josé; and arts council silicon valley in partnership with the county of santa clara, and the california arts council.

Open Sim / Second Life Workshop at 01SJ 2008

James just wrote me to tell of a really interesting event coming up regarding open second life servers

Ars Virtua & The CADRE Laboratory for New Media will host a workshop on open source alternatives to the Second Life(TM) grid, in conjunction with the 2nd Biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge.

This two hour workshop provides an overview of open-source, third-party virtual-world server technology based on Second Life(TM), and the opportunities afforded to artists and experimenters who are now able to cheaply host tailored synthetic spaces.

The first hour will be devoted to a brief overview of Second Life and the “OpenMetaverse” initiatives (libsl, opensim, etc.) Bennett Goble of Ars Virtua will discuss features and show demos of the most popular alternatives (OpenSim, OpenLife & realXtend), their qualities, strengths etc.

We will consider the issues surrounding installation, maintenance and function of the OpenSim server and will be connecting participants through third-party clients and through modifications of the Linden Lab Second Life client.

During this session participants will have an opportunity to look at code, and to consider the space as a place for artistic experimentation and collaboration. Special consideration will be given to coding within the environment and control afforded by building and running servers.

The workshop will be held from noon - 2 p.m. Friday June 6 in room 237 of the art building on SJSU campus. This workshop is free and open to the public.

Star Simpson legal defense fund

I don’t know if anyone else is as pissed off about what happened to Star Simpson today (actually, my coworker Tony is, he alerted me to this whole debacle), but I just want to say that I’m pledging $20 towards her legal defense fund. I don’t really know if she needs it or what, but I just can’t even believe how lame boston is about LED artwork. At best, she could have been asked to remove the “device” while in the airport. That might have infringed on her free speech, but if it’s between that and being arrested and accused of having a “hoax bomb”, I think we could make considerations to morons who can’t tell the difference between blinking LEDs and a whole bomb. BUT, since she’s been arrested, and wrongly accused to disorderly conduct, she now faces a legal battle.

Joe Miller on why Works needs you

Joe Miller, amongst his other accolades, is a 20 year volunteer to Works/San Jos?. He’s sent along some thoughts on what Works is, and why Works needs your help now.

Works/San Jos? is truly your art and performance center. Works is the only arts organization in the South Bay where our community determines the content of exhibitions and performances. This open submissions process has made Works a welcoming art center where cross-cultural exhibitions, often featuring first-time exhibitors and curators, come naturally. Works is supportive of a broad spectrum of artists and artistic endeavors, with programs for kids in arts, teen assistants and advisors, curatorial workshops, and legal and technical workshops for advancement of artistic careers.

Thirty years of community art programming hasn’t just produced a calendar of exhibitions, events, and workshops. It has fostered a community around artwhere long-time patrons, casual visitors, and members of our community with concerns altogether outside the arts, can come together to experience new ideas and meet the challenge of understanding one another through artistic means.

Help bring Works home to South First Street. Works needs your help now to recuperate $30,000 used to prepare the building for exhibitions. While much has been accomplished, gallery walls, office spaces, classroom equipment, and the artist-in-residence studio all await funding for completion.

As part of the annual Music and Arts Campaign, we are presently one-third of the way to $30,000 that is needed now to make up this funding shortfall. One of our two part-time employees has taken leave, and the other is working without pay to hold Works until we can make up this gap. Closing this gap now allows Works to retain the essential Gallery Coordinator position, and will help move the organization toward the future with your stable support. Please contribute $100 or more now, but any amount will help, and there are gifts and rewards for larger amounts.

This Friday Works opens eXact-O!the first community curator exhibition in its new home. Please come from 7pm till late to be amazed by the art, and to show your support for challenging art and performance in San Jos?. See you soon at Works!
